5.1.8 Download GPS Track from PDA

Level of expertise required for this Chapter: Advanced; general GIS training

See Chapter 5.1.6 for the procedure to track in the field.

You can download tracked data from your PDA either through KML or through GPX files.


A) KML file approach:

1. Connect PDA to PC via download cable.

2. Turn PDA on.

3. Wait a few minutes, till it has synchronized.

4. Copy the files from folder SD-MM card to your PC. (It is recommended to keep the same filename).

5. Disconnect (or turn PDA off). Do not un-sychronize.

6. Load software GPSUtility (If not available, contact TCPD-HQ / LUPMIS. For installation see  Annex 7). See  Chapter 2.2 for full description of a similar conversion.

Load GPSUtility > License conditions for GPS Utility window: Yes > GPSUtility window: Open > Open window: Select Data type: Google Earth (kml, kmz) > Select folder and file > Open > Confirm window: Yes >
> File > Save/Export options > Save / Export / Print Options window: Select Format: Shape fileset (SHP+SHX,DBF) > Export As >
> Save as window: Select folder > Specify file name > Save > File > Exit


8. Load Map Maker.

9. Check the polyline, you just created.

10. Most likely, you have a far away point of coordinates 0,0, which you have to delete.

B) GPX file approach:

1. Connect PDA to PC via download cable

2. At the PDA: Turn PDA on > Wait a few minutes > Copy the files from folder SD-MMcard to your PC. (It is recommended to keep the same filename) > Disconnect (or turn PDA off). Do not un-sychronize.

3. With conversion program EGPS2shp: Load software EGPS2shp. (If not available, contact TCPD-HQ / LUPMIS,  email. For installation see Annex 7.

4. In MapMaker: Check the polyline, you just created > Most likely, you have a far away point of coordinates 0,0, which you have to delete
