6.4 Legend

Level of expertise required for this Chapter: Advanced; general Map Maker training

6.4.1 Creation of Legend

After you have created the map with all layers, you can prepare the hardcopy print of the map with all marginalia, including the legend. You start with creating the legend:
Right-mouse > Project manager > Project manager window: Project legend > Legend items > New polygon item > Click on the first box below ‘Legend items’ > Select the first unit > Colour and text should appear, if not or if you want to modify: Click on text > Edit caption window: Enter text, which should appear in the legend > Delete Object label > OK >

> New polygon item > Repeat procedure above for all units > Preview > Write down the width of legend, or modify/reduce size, if necessary >

You can save the legend as an EMF graphics file: > Save Enhanced Metafile > Select folder > Define file name >

> Save > OK

If there are mapping units, which you want to appear in the legend, but they refer to another style set, they will not appear in the listing of the project style set. The easiest way to bring such a unit into the legend, is to create a dummy style at the end of the project style set (in LUPMIS, for example, unit 80 or 79) with the same colour/symbol as in the theme-specific style of reference.

Alternatively, you can import-add another style set to the project style set.

Alternatively, you can create a legend in a graphics program (for example, Paint Shop Pro) and save it as EMF file.

You can also create automatically a legend by: Right-mouse > Project manager > Project manager window: Layers > Select layer > Style > Assign according to … > Database > Data column > Select data column > Filter data in …. > New filter or Edit filter or Choose filter > Edit filter > Data bands window: Filter > Create or modify legend, if necessary > Legend > Preview > Save as EMF file > Select folder > Define file name > Save > OK

6.4.2 Display of Legend

You can now display the legend on your screen display by:
Right-mouse > Map furniture > Box cursor: Drag window, where legend should appear > Map furniture window: Furniture type > Project legend > Location > Width and Height as noted before > OK

You can resize the legend or change its position, as explained in  Chapter 6.3.1, last paras.

If you have an EMF file as legend (see alternatives in Chapter 6.4.1 above), you display the legend  by:
Right-mouse > Map furniture > Box cursor: Drag window, where legend should appear > Map furniture window: Enhanced Metafile (emf) > Select folder and file > Open > OK
