8.2.12.4 Raster

Level of expertise required for this Chapter: Intermediate; specifically for LUPMIS @ TCPD

These Tools covers conversion options of raster formats:

  •    a) Convert  JPG to ECW and Other Formats

The (new) standard format for all LUPMIS images (satellite images, aerial photographs, topo maps) is ECWStandards are well defined in LUPMIS, and can be retrieved e.g. through the Drawing Tool 'Coverage' (see Chapter 8.2.14).

ECW stands for Enhanced Compression Wavelet, and is proprietary wavelet compression image format optimized for aerial and satellite imagery. The compression rate is very high, without loss; loading in GIS software is very fast.

JPG images (either from earlier LUPMIS installations or from external sources) can be converted to ECW with this Drawing Tool > Format conversion > Format conversion: Raster > Convert JPG > Single / Many maps:

With the 'Many maps' option you can convert all JPG files in the selected folder. Just pick any JPG file in a folder, and it will convert all JPG files of that folder.

This will convert the JPG file(s) and store the converted images (e.g. in ECW format) in the same folder with '_conv2ECW' attached to the original file name.

Example: 8170650_2006_2x1_60.jpg converted to 8170650_2006_2x1_60_conv2ECW.ecw

Beside to ECW, images can also be converted to BMP or TIF format.

  •    b) Convert  ECW to JPG and Other Formats

ECW images can be converted to other image formats with this Drawing Tool > Format conversion > Format conversion: Raster > Convert JPG > Single / Many maps, very similar to the process above.

With the 'Many maps' option you can convert all ECW files in the selected folder. Just pick any ECW file in a folder, and it will convert all ECW files of that folder.

Currently, following formats are supported as output formats:
- JPG
- BMP
- TIF

The converted images will be saved in the same folder with '_conv2xxx' attached to the original file name, with xxx for the target format, such as JPG or TIF.

Example: 8170650_2006_2x1_60.ecw converted to 8170650_2006_2x1_60_conv2ECW.jpg

  •    c) Convert Other Formats

In a similar way as described above, images in the formats of:
- TIF
- BMP
- IMG
- JPG2

can be converted.
