A9.5 Regions, Districts and Settlements

Codes for Regions, Districts and settlements are used in LUPMIS for efficient, standardized system processing:

Region code is a number between 1 and 10, starting from low number in the south, to high numbers in the north, as established by various Ministries and Departments in Ghana, e.g. 5 for Ashanti.

In the GIS, this can be viewed at or derived from the GIS master file Ghana_region.dra.

District code is a 2-digit number between 01 and 99 as established by the Ministry for Local Government. It follows the Region code, e.g. 802 for Yendi.

In the GIS, this can be viewed at or derived from the GIS master file Ghana_district.dra or year-specifically from Ghana_district_year.dra.

Settlement code is a 3-digit number between 001 and 999. It follows the District code, e.g. 215002 for Mumford (in CR).

In the GIS, this can be viewed at or derived from the GIS master file Ghana_settlementsmain_nation.dra.

In metropolitans and some municipialities of Greater Accra, 'settlements' are called 'communities'. In areas, where Ghana Statistical Services have declared a submetro, a submetro code is the 4.digit in the settlement code, e.g. digit 5 in 102503.

000 as the last 3 digits indicate a generic identifier for a metropolitan.
001 as the last 3 digits indicate a District capital.
In metros with more than 9 submetro codes, the 5.digit is renamed to 5ff.

This list reflects the status of 2012, released by the Ministry of Local Governments (received and entered in LUPMIS June 2013).

District capitals have the settlement code of the District code + 001, e.g. 102 001 for Accra. Settlement codes are the first step towards a national zip code system.

Technical note: District codes can not be changed, only added. Master source for District codes is file Ghana_district.dra. District names can be edited: First in file Ghana_district.dra, then in the database through (Region) > Census Tools > Entry > Import Districts > Re-assign District names from District codes > (Ghana) > Region -> Nation .
